Ed Sheeran - Lego house

The video was filmed at the University of Hertfordshire and was released on the 20th October 2011 on Ed’s YouTube channel. The main star in the video is Rupert Grint which creates a fan base off the back of the Harry Potter films. This creates a wide audience already as the HP films were so popular.

The narrative of the video shows Grint as Sheeran. It tells the audience this by him doing activities like writing the lyrics for Lego house in a notebook and spending time in the tour bus before ultimately taking the stage at a Sheeran concert. It is later revealed that Rupert is merely an obsessive lookalike who eventually stalks Ed. The video ends with the two meeting as Grint is forced out of the music venue when Ed comes out of a lift.

A lego-fied version of the video was released on the 11th April 2013 on the Warner Sound’s YouTube channel. This was directed by Dylan Woodley and gave the opportunity to advertise the song again and to increase revenues.

The song itself was written by Ed Sheeran, Jake Gosling and Chris Leonard and produced by Jake Gosling. The label on it is Warner Music Group hence why they were the ones to make the lego-fied version.

What I like about the video

I like the fact that Rupert being a stalker was kept until the end; it stops the audience getting bored and creates an interesting plot twist.

I also love Rupert’s performance, he is always sincere in his acting and it fits perfectly with the feel of the song. I feel like he was a good choice, not only because of his looks.

Another thing that I like about the video is the different array of angles and movements; this gives it more depth and stops it looking flat and boring. This keeps the audience interested.

The choice of settings is also affective as it gives it a more realistic and believable feel. People who watch the video can connect as most likely they have walked through somewhere that is similar to these locations.

The lighting is very muted, as are the colours used which accentuates the gentle acoustic style of the song which I like a lot but that is just personal preference.

The last thing I like is that the hair and clothing is scruffy and unkempt, as with the rest of the mise-en-scene it matches with the style of the song but also the style of the artist himself. Ed shows himself to be very laid back and not too bothered about his appearance.

What I don’t like about the video

I don’t like the elements of humour that have been added, for example the cuddling at the end, I feel as though it was slightly half hearted and not funny. It also doesn’t fit the overall emotion of the song which is Grint longing to be Ed, it is all very serious.

The other aspect I don’t like is that I can’t help feeling that the crazy side of Rupert could have been kept hidden for a bit longer but that might just be me being pedantic.

Overall I really like the video and I think we could take a lot of ideas from it to add to our own video.
