Preliminary Task
Our task was to create a music video, a digipak and a poster for the song
‘What Makes You Beautiful’ by One Direction as was chosen by the media class.
It is fair to say that our group was not the biggest fans of the song but
nevertheless a video was created which was popular among friends and family.
The Video
For our narrative we decided to go for a comedic theme. It is the story
oftwo boys obsessing over who they think is a girl in different situations. He
quite obviously isn't a girl but that is the point. Finally at the end he
reveals his true identity and the two boys are understandibly shocked. Not the
most complex narrative but it was the best we could come up with in such a
short time frame.
The locations we used were Tynemouth front street, Tynemouth Longsands,
King Edward's Bay and Collingwood's monument. We thought these would accentuate
the carefree happy feel of the song, we were also very lucky with the weather
as it was mostly sunny which also fitted the style.
The Digipak
Our digipak consists of two frames and a spine. Since we decided to make
the video a mickey take of One Direction, we called our band two direction. As
you can probably see, we didn't spend the most time on the digipak. The photos
have strange lighting and the placement of the two 'artists' wasn't very well
thought out. The location we used was the school field, however if we had had a
choice we would have chosen somewhere that related to the video.
One good thing that came out of the
digipak was that in the back cover picture there was a lamp post placed
inconveniantly between the two guys and Melville successfully photoshoped it
out so that there is no sign of it.
The Poster
Our poster consists of the three main characters in our video, it also
follows the convention of having the reviews from other recognisable brands.
unfortunately that is one of the only conventions used. There is too much white
space and the red boxes make it look amaturish. However the pictures have good
lighting and almost look like they were taken professionally. But all in all I feel like this was the least
successful part of the project.
Problems
We encountered a few problems when producing the video. One of these
problems was attempting to get all of the actors we wanted together at once in
the limited time frame we had been given. We ended up having only two days to
film the whole video, this means that not all of the shots were able to be
filmed to our best ability.
Another problem we encountered was the amount of time it took to plan the
video, it ended up that one member took everything home and wrote up the plan
without consulting the group as there was just not enough lesson time. However
it all turned out fine in the end.
One more problem was that we hadn’t planned enough frames so we had too few
shots that were all slightly too long which makes the video slow to watch. This
is a simple fix for the official coursework as we will have more planning time.
The actual filming was also a problem as we wanted our group of actors
singing along with the music but our speakers weren’t loud enough for them to
hear which created timing issues as people were singing too quickly. One of
these was cleverly fixed with an inserted clip of a flash back to cover the
fast singing.
A problem that relates to editing was that there was a lack of not cheesy
effects to go from one shot to another, this wasn’t as much of an issue with
this song as we could afford a little extra cheese but with a more serious
project there will have to be a lot of cross fades as there is little else that
is suitable.
Unfortunately the dynamics of the group were no the best as one member was
particularly difficult to work with and this meant little communication and the
poster was what fell foul to this. Many variations were created but they all
looked wrong as the person creating it refused to use conventions of music
posters. This would be fixed easily by using the conventions.
The final problem was that the digipak was left to last and this meant we
didn’t have time to go to a proper location to shoot the images. This left it
looking slightly sub-par because lighting was off and the location doesn’t fit
the rest of the video.
